Racing! Heading into a strong racing weekend

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we prepare for a weekend of three Derby prep races.

It’s a big day at Santa Anita with four graded stakes races. One of them is the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes over 6 furlongs. It’s notable because of the return of Roy H after winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint followed up by the Eclipse Award for male sprinter.

Rather than a standard preview, we decided to look at the two monumental events in trainer Peter Miller’s life last year. One great and the other devastating. So, for a look at that, just click here.

For the other local stakes, just look down below under the Santa Anita preview.

Also bearing attention Saturday are two Kentucky Derby preps. There is the Withers at Aqueduct and the Holy Bull at Gulfstream. They, along with the Robert Lewis at Santa Anita, are points races toward Derby qualification.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s this week’s contribution from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is by breaking down a race in detail you can learn to handicap like the pros.

Today, Rob looks at the fourth race at Santa Anita.

This is an optional claimer coming down the hill on the turf at 6 ½ furlongs, the most unique layout in the country, featuring the right-hand turn shortly into the race that quickly swings favor to those racing up close from an outer post. It then descends down the hill, and finally crosses the dirt portion of the track. In the end, top pick is TIZANILLUSION (#1). Here’s a great example of a horse who transfers his or her sharp form from track to track, the sign of a horse not affected by the track, usually an easygoing sort who can adapt to all circumstances, meaning, new track surfaces, barn areas, weather, etc. With that in mind, the fact she debuts here at Santa Anita shouldn’t be of concern, as we’ll fully expect her to fire over the new layout with the brief freshening in place and Drayden Van Dyke back in the saddle. He’s good with just about every horse he hops aboard, almost always moving his runners up.

SALTEN SAPITY (#8) is worth a look. Sometimes jockey movement can be pretty useful, as is the case here with this one. Notice that Flavien Prat was riding MONGOLIAN SHOPPER last time out, and despite winning nicely with that one, Flavien keeps his allegiance with the Richard Mandella barn, moving to a filly who’s been inconsistent (unlike the top pick). He fits her well and much better from off the pace than Tyler Baze, and tactically, there should be enough early pace to allow for a progressive trip late.

Race Outlook: Multiples runners would be useful here.

Win Contenders (order of preference): 1-8-7

X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 10

Positive Notes:

4 A Little Bit Me — Strings races together for the first time since last June, always a good thing.

7 Tweeting — Speaking of jockey movement, here’s one you can adhere to, Smith rides for Spawr only with well meant runners. We HAVE to include.

Negative Notes:

1 Demigoddess — Stutts is just so poor with placing his runners. This is also the same trainer who back in 2006, ran a filly four times in 23 days, which would be fine if the horse was doing super, but far back in each start, just so hard to watch.

TOP PICK: TIZANILLUSION (#1 5-2 Van Dyke)

SECOND CHOICE: SALTEN SAPITY (#8 6-1 Prat)

The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at https://www.westcoasthorseracing.com It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.

Santa Anita review

Friday’s card was topped by a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight, which was won by Bob Baffert’s Restoring Hope. The colt’s winning margin of 3 ½ lengths puts him in a rather crowded field of promising 3-year-olds in Baffert’s barn. He was running in one of the boutique races order by Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo. It was for homebreds and horses bought at public auction for $100,000 or less.

Restoring Hope was homebred by Gary and Mary West, who also own West Coast.

“He’s a caught up now,” Baffert told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “We were playing catch-up with him going into his last race but we’re ready for the deep end of the pool now.”

The colt, with Prat aboard, paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.40.

Longden finished second and Jimmy Chila was third.

Santa Anita preview

It’s a nine-race card with the first post at 12:30 p.m. Up first among the stakes is the third race, the $200,000 Palos Verdes over 6 furlongs. Roy H is the 3-5 favorite in the five-horse field. As mentioned above, you can read about it here. Post time is about 1:30 p.m.

At about 2:30 p.m. is the Kentucky Derby prep the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes. It has a 10-4-2-1 point value. Most of the known Kentucky Derby wannabes at Santa Anita are skipping this race and pointing to shipping or the San Felipe.

Peace is the 3-1 favorite in the nine-horse 1 1/16-mile race. He has won over two turns, which is a good sign, but even more telling is Mike Smith has elected to ride the Mandella colt, over Shivermetimbers for Jerry Hollendorfer.

Shiver beat Peace by a head on Nov. 23, which was Shiver’s last race. The break should also help him. Rafael Bejarano will ride the 7-2 second choice.

The seventh race, at about 3:30 p.m., will be the $200,000 San Marcos Stakes, over 1 ¼ on the turf for older horses. This might as well be called the San Gabriel Stakes, Part 2, even though it is 1/8 mile longer. Six of the eight starters ran in that race, which was won by Itsinthepost, who is the 9-5 favorite for trainer Jeff Mullins.

Isotherm, fifth in the San Gabriel, is the 3-1 second choice with jockey Prat and trainer Phil D’Amato. Flamboyant, who showed a wicked kick to finish second in the San Gabriel, is the 4-1 third choice.

The final stakes is the $200,000 San Pasqual for older horses at 1 1/18 miles and set to go about 4 p.m. The second favorite, at 7-2, is Mubtaahij, who burst on to the local scene by winning the Awesome Again Stakes for Baffert. But then he followed up with a lackluster eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and a third to stablemate Irish Freedom in the Native Diver Stakes. Smith is on Irish Freedom and Van Dyke on Mubtaahij.

Top Of The Game is the 3-1 favorite, returning to the dirt after a poor run on the turf in the San Gabriel Stakes. The combination of Kent Desormeaux and Vladimir Cerin has been strong so far this season.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

FOURTH RACE: No. 4 A Little Bit Me (6-1)

Making her third start in this country, 4-year-old filly from the Doug O’Neill stable might be coming up to her best. She dueled from the rail vs. similar before tiring in the final 100 yards but might be able to get a more comfortable stalking trip here and spring a minor upset in this first-level allowance event.

Friday Result: Heartfullofstars got a good trip behind the leaders but offered no punch through the lane in a disappointer.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Los Alamitos reminder

No racing Saturday or Sunday. They are giving the racing surface a little rehabbing. Racing returns next Friday.
