Racing! It’s our weekly look at the Kentucky Derby race

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as the road to the Derby heats up again.

The path to the Kentucky Derby continues to lurch toward the first Saturday in May. To help get you to that date, we’ve got the insightful Jon White, the morning-line maker at Santa Anita, to analyze what to look for and what to expect. Here’s this week’s look at his Top 10 heading toward the Derby. It’s great stuff.

So, Jon, the floor is yours.

“Catholic Boy drops a notch to No. 10 this week after being defeated last Saturday in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs when he finished second as an odds-on favorite. Catholic Boy lost by just a half-length. It should be remembered that Catholic Boy had not raced since Dec. 2. With a light work tab going into his 2018 debut, I look for Catholic Boy to probably run better when he makes his next start.

“Catholic Boy just barely edged out Flameaway for the No. 10 spot this week. Flameaway won the Sam F. Davis in a 10-1 upset. I was impressed by the determination that Flameaway exhibited in holding off Catholic Boy in the stretch all the way to the finish. In terms of the 1 1/4-mile distance of the Kentucky Derby, which often proves to be too long of a trip for a horse, keep in mind Flameaway's dam is a daughter of 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.

“This is an important week for No. 2 Instilled Regard. He is the 8-5 morning line favorite in Saturday's Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds. He returns to New Orleans after winning the Lecomte Stakes by nearly four lengths there on Jan. 13 for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

“I see Noble Indy as a serious threat to Instilled Regard in the Risen Star. Noble Indy, based in Florida, is two for two for trainer Todd Pletcher.

“Sporting Chance, winner of the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga last summer, is scheduled to make his first 2018 start in Monday's Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park. The Tiznow colt has fired a number of bullets in the a.m. leading up to his return to the racing wars.

“Bolt D'Oro had a bullet of his own Wednesday morning at Santa Anita, working five furlongs in :59.40, fastest of 29 works at the distance. Owned and trained by Mick Ruis, Bolt D'Oro continues to gear up for his first 2018 race, Santa Anita's San Felipe Stakes on March 10.

“Mask exits my Top 10 this week. Impressive winner of the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park in early January, his Kentucky Derby situation is looking bleaker by the day. He reportedly has had a setback of some sort. He won't get back onto my Top 10 until we see a workout from him or at least get some positive news.

“Mask's departure has opened the door for Free Drop Billy to join the Top 10 party this week at No. 9. Free Drop Billy finished second to Audible in Gulfstream's Holy Bull Stakes on Feb. 3.

“It is looking more and more to me that the 2018 Kentucky Derby winner is going to be one of these five horses: McKinzie, Instilled Regard, Good Magic, Bold D'Oro or Audible. At this time, I like McKinzie a lot. I think McKinzie has a very good chance to win the Kentucky Derby, a race his sire, Street Sense, won in 2007.”

Jon White's Kentucky Derby Top 10

1. McKinzie (1)

2. Instilled Regard (2)

3. Good Magic (3)

4. Bolt d'Oro (4)

5. Audible (5)

6. Solomini (6)

7. Avery Island (7)

8. Sporting Chance (10)

9. Free Drop Billy (NR)

10. Catholic Boy (9)

Santa Anita review

Dalmore, who has been off for almost six months, blew away the field in Thursday’s 1 1/16-mile allowance feature by 8 ½ lengths. Cat Burglar finished second and Hot Sean, the favorite, was third.

Dalmore, trained by Keith Desormeaux and ridden by Kent Desormeaux, paid $11.80, $5.80 and $2.80. The purse in the race was $63,000.

Keith was asked by Santa Anita’s Mike Willman if he bet on the race. “Yeah, I bet a little, but it’s never enough,” Keith said.

Santa Anita preview

Friday’s eight-race card is decent with three turf races, mostly full fields and four races that will have one fewer maiden after the conclusion. There are two allowance/optional claimers, the second and sixth. The second race is for fillies and mares 4 and up, while the sixth is open company for 4 and up.

The turf races, with the rail at 30 feet, are the first, fifth and eighth. The field sizes, in order, are: 8, 6, 7, 8, 9, 6, 9, 9.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

FIFTH RACE: No. 7 Mr. Twinery (6-1)

With a seemingly vulnerable morning line favorite, let's try Mr. Twinery (6-1) at a very square price. Trained by Hollendorfer, the speedy gelding tries going long on turf for the first time in this restricted claimer. Depending on how fast they go early, he could be very dangerous on the front end, especially with the rail is out 30 feet. Box him in the exacta with longshot Iron Alex (8-1), who had some traffic trouble on the far turn last time.

Thursday Result: Spanish Hombre finished sixth after chasing Tribal Fighter the first half of the race.

Los Alamitos weekend preview

I’ve decided to leave this weekly segment in the hands of Orlando Gutierrez, marketing and media maven at Los Al. So, take it away, Orlando.

“The stakes racing action continues with the running of the $35,000 Denim N Diamonds Handicap for aged mares at 350 yards on Saturday night. There is a full field of 10 sophomores competing in the $107,500 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes on Sunday evening.

“The Denim N Diamonds has attracted nine top distaffers headed by major stakes placed mare Strawfinders Jessee, the 2-1 morning-line favorite, and multiple stakes finalist Jess Mas, the second choice at 9-2. Trained by John Cooper, Strawfinders Jessee ran third in the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap on Jan. 7, while Jess Mas was fourth in last year’s Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby and sixth in the Grade 1 Charger Bar. Strawfinders Jessee and Jess Mas are two of the five distaffers in the Denim N Diamonds sired by the stallion One Sweet Jess. The field also features four local stakes winners in Maggie Durant, Precious Dominique, Zendaya, and Scholarly.

“The Denim N Diamonds is named in honor of the 1981 Champion of Champions winner owned by R.D. Hubbard. The outstanding mare was part of one of quarter-horse racing’s most memorable rivalries with Sgt Pepper Feature, who would later defeat her to win the 1982 Champion of Champions on the way to being named that year’s world champion. The first race on Saturday night is 6 p.m.

“Ten sophomores will run in the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes at 350 yards headed by fastest qualifier RF Might Be A Hero and second fastest qualifier Firey Colt. Power Thinker posted only the fifth fastest time in the trials, but he beat them both in a maiden race back on Dec. 29. Horses were eligible to race in these trials if they were maidens as of Dec. 1, 2017. The first race on Sunday night is 5:15 p.m. The Friday night post is 7 p.m.

Chris Wade’s LA play of the day

RACE EIGHT: No. 1 Somehat Special (4-1)

She is a trouble-prone runner deluxe who finished a much better than looked fifth versus a solid cast of Los Alamitos Winter Derby trial rivals. In that trial, this filly broke slow and was crossed by quicker rivals to lose early racing momentum. After the less than stellar getaway, this filly finished with a good amount of run late prior to galloping out with glee. With an expected clean journey from the rail, which produced her best start to date, let's push the big bodied runner at 4-1.

(Note: Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
