Chargers’ Joey Bosa, Philip Rivers go L.A. with visit to ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

Joey Bosa made a goal during his first NFL season: He wanted to become defensive rookie of the year.

The Chargers defensive end was honored as such Tuesday morning.

The rest is now falling into place.

Los Angeles has a way of rewarding its superstar athletes. Bosa, perhaps the next one, received a preview, appearing with quarterback Philip Rivers for a segment on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that aired late Tuesday evening.

Bosa discussed his accolade while sitting in a red velvet chair in the show’s green room.

A few more seasons like that, and he can get comfortable.

“I’m excited. I wanted that one,” Bosa said of the award, which was voted upon by the Pro Football Writers of America. “I don’t play for the accolades, but I just wanted to be undeniably the best rookie defensive player in the NFL, and by them giving me that, I know I proved it.”

The Rivers and Bosa segment appeared shortly after Kimmel’s monologue.

When introducing the comedy sketch, Kimmel claimed to cite NFL rules that state “the Chargers cannot leave San Diego until the players have been officially sworn in.” Rivers and Bosa each placed a hand on yoga pants and were asked to “solemnly swear to play football in the great city of Los Angeles” and “to try to be better than the Rams, which shouldn’t be that hard.”

There was visible reservation out of respect to the Rams.

But the skit continued.

Ultimately, Kimmel asked them to vow to “do everything I remember to marry and eventually divorce a Kardashian.” Rivers didn’t repeat that one, the father of eight pointing to his wedding ring, so it fell on Bosa.

Bosa, 21, missed the first four games to injury in 2016 following a contract dispute. He then totaled two sacks in both Weeks 5 and 7, finishing with 10 1/2 in 12 games. The Associated Press is scheduled to name its defensive rookie of the year on Feb. 5. He is considered a heavy favorite.
