Americans Missy Franklin and Jessica Hardy were fifth and eighth, respectively.

Kromowidjojo’s victory was not considered an upset as she came to London with the fastest time in the world this season and had come on strong at the world championships last year, taking third.

Earlier in the London Games, she was part of the Dutch 400-meter freestyle relay team that placed second.
