Outside linebacker Aldon Smith has signed a one-year deal with the Raiders, a month after his turbulent 49ers career came to an arrest-related end.

Smith, the 49ers’ first-round draft pick in 2011, remains subject to potential league discipline in the wake of his Aug. 6 arrest for an alleged hit-and-run, drunken-driving accident. It was the fifth time he’d been arrested or charged since 2012.

The Santa Clara (Calif.) County District Attorney’s office filed three misdemeanor counts against Smith shortly after news of his signing broke, including DUI with a prior conviction, according to ABC7. He will be arraigned on Oct. 6, one day before the Raiders’ Week 4 game in Chicago against the Bears.

Still, Smith wasted no time getting to work in his new surroundings. He was on the practice field working out with the Raiders on Friday morning, wearing the same No. 99 he wore with the 49ers.

Veteran safety Charles Woodson says he won’t babysit Smith and doesn’t think it is Raiders players’ obligation. “He’s a grown man,” Woodson said.

Justin Tuck, another Raiders veteran who shares an agent with Smith, was asked whether he pushed for the signing. “I plead the fifth,” Tuck replied.

“We are confident that the Raiders provide an environment where Aldon can thrive through the support, structure and leadership within the building,” general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a statement. “We are excited to have Aldon here in the Raiders family.”

While the league reviews a case that remains in its infancy in the legal process, Smith could suit up and play in the Raiders’ season opener Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Smith chose to sign with the Raiders after also drawing interest from the St. Louis Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole was first to report Smith’s union with the Raiders.

Cole also reported the deal to be worth $8 million plus incentives and that Smith turned down more lucrative offers to stay in the Bay Area.

“Aldon is an extremely talented young player,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said. “We welcome him to the Raiders family and expect him to bring his best every day and be a great teammate.”

Smith served a nine-game suspension at the start of last season for violating the league’s substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies. He missed five games in 2013 while seeking substance-abuse treatment following a drunken-driving accident in San Jose.

Former Raiders executive Amy Trask, now a CBS analyst, reacted to Smith’s signing by tweeting: “From a roster perspective good signing. But perhaps we all agree that if Al (Davis) did this, he’d receive opprobrium.”
