TEMPE, Ariz. — Sean Burnett took what he called a “huge step” in his return from elbow surgery Thursday morning, the Angels reliever throwing 30 fastballs off a bullpen mound at about 85% to 90% intensity.

“It felt good — I didn’t fatigue at all,” Burnett said. “I was kind of pushing it to see what I have. I’m a competitor. I want to see where I’m at, and my 30th pitch felt as good as the others.”

Burnett, who was limited by elbow problems to 13 games last season and underwent surgery to repair a small tear in August, said he will need two or three more bullpen workouts and to throw batting practice to hitters before he pitches in an exhibition game.

With so many powerful left-handed hitters in the American League West, Burnett could play a significant bullpen role this season. Though he appears doubtful for the March 31 season opener, he could be ready in early April.

“The biggest step isn’t physical, it’s emotional, mental,” Burnett said. “Last year I felt so good, and after a couple of pitches off the mound it started bothering me. Today was a big mental step for me, a big hurdle. With each step, hopefully, it will get better.”

Manager Mike Scioscia did not see Burnett throw Thursday but he got a glowing report from pitching coach Mike Butcher.

“Butch said he had a nice arm stroke, real easy, and the ball came out well,” Scioscia said. “That’s encouraging.”
