Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller out for season

Ohio State’s national title dreams took a huge hit Tuesday with news that star quarterback Braxton Miller has been lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

The Columbus Dispatch reported late Monday that Miller could be out for the season, while a ESPN cited a source Tuesday confirming that Miller was done for 2014. Ohio State later confirmed Miller will miss the entire season.

Miller is a three-year starter who has helped lead Ohio State to 24 straight regular-season wins. Miller accounted for 3,162 total yards and 36 touchdowns in 2013.

Freshman J.T. Barrett is the leading candidate to replace Miller for Ohio State’s season opener against Navy.

Miller had surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder last February after injuring it in Ohio State’s Orange Bowl loss to Clemson.

Miller’s recovery was reportedly on track but he reinjured the shoulder on a routine pass at practice Monday. Miller had complained of shoulder soreness and fatigue in the days prior to Monday’s injury.

Ohio State was picked by the media to win the Big Ten Conference and the Buckeyes were considered contenders for college football’s new four-team playoff. The Buckeyes opened at No. 6 in the preseason USA Today coaches’ poll and No. 5 in the Associated Press rankings.
