Donald Sterling uproar: A look at Marge Schott, other penalized owners

While the Clippers and NBA fans await what penalty the league will hand down to Clippers owner Donald Sterling for racist comments he allegedly made, here’s a look at some notable past fines and suspensions of team owners around sports.

NBA

JERRY BUSS

The Lakers owner was suspended for two games and fined $25,000 in Nov. 2007 after his conviction on a misdemeanor drunken-driving charge.

MARK CUBAN
The Dallas Mavericks owner has been fined approximately $1.5 million over the years, including: In a 2006 playoff series between the Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, Cuban was fined $200,000 for cursing at Spurs forward Bruce Bowen. After the 2006 NBA Finals, Cuban was fined $250,000 for repeated misconduct. On May 22, 2010, Cuban was fined $100,000 for comments he made about trying to sign LeBron James. On Jan. 18, 2014, Cuban was again fined $100,000 for confronting referees and using inappropriate language toward them. In 2002, Cuban was fined $500,000 for saying that bad officiating left his star players vulnerable to serious injuries

GLEN TAYLOR
In 2000, the league suspended the Minnesota Timberwolves owner for a year, fined the team $3.5 million and stripped the franchise of five No. 1 draft picks in finding that Taylor circumvented the NBA salary cap in the team’s signing of free-agent Joe Smith.

WILLIAM D. COX

The Philadelphia Phillies owner was banned for life in 1943 for betting on baseball games.

HORACE FOGEL

The Philadelphia Phillies owner was banned for life in 1912 after saying that the NL was corrupt and that umpires fixed games for the New York Giants.

MARGE SCHOTT

In Feb. 1993, the Cincinnati Reds owner was suspended for one year and fined $25,000 after a series of racist and insensitive comments. In 1996, she was suspended for life after stating her support for Adolf Hitler. She sold the team in 1999.

GEORGE STEINBRENNERThe New York Yankees owner was suspended three times.

— He was suspended two years by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn for illegally supporting the Richard Nixon presidential campaign in 1972.

— He was suspended for one week in 1983 after publicly criticizing umpires.

— He was banned for life in 1990 for hiring a gambler to follow Dave Winfield to try to find disparaging information to use against him in a lawsuit. He was reinstated from his lifetime ban in 1993.

TED TURNER

The Atlanta Braves owner was suspended for one year in 1977 for negotiating with outfielder Gary Matthews before he officially became a free agent.

NFL

EDDIE DEBARTOLO

The San Francisco 49ers owner was suspended for one year after his 1998 felony conviction for failing to report extortion.
