Commentary: Florida State QB Jameis Winston cited in seafood shoplifting case

The world may be his oyster, but authorities said that apparently didn’t stop Florida State star quarterback Jameis Winston from stealing ... crab legs?

That’s right, the hero of the Seminoles’ run to the Bowl Championship Series title at the Rose Bowl was reportedly cited after officials said he shoplifted seafood at a Publix grocery store.

Winston, winner of last year’s Heisman Trophy, is no stranger to controversy. He was investigated last fall in connection with a rape allegation by a Florida State student. Florida’s state attorney, however, determined there was not enough evidence to file charges.

But why now, and why crab legs? The NCAA recently ruled that all scholarship and walk-on student-athletes were entitled to unlimited meals while attending college.

Under the new rules, Winston could feast for free at any seafood buffet while watching episodes of “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

We can’t wait for the Florida State news release explaining this one.

If Winston plays his cards right, he might be able to parlay this into a cameo on “Deadliest Catch.”

What is it with Florida State players and shoplifting? Years ago, star receiver Peter Warrick was cited and suspended after officials said he received clothes at a reduced price at a Tallahassee department store.

That was referred to as a “Five Finger Discount.”

The 20-year-old quarterback will be a third-year sophomore this season, and is also a pitcher for the Seminoles’ baseball team.

Winston threw the game-winning touchdown pass to lead Florida State to the BCS title win over Auburn in Pasadena in January.

Florida State will be a leading title contender again this year as college football moves to a new four-team playoff.
