Judge orders release of actuarial report behind NFL concussion deal
A federal judge has ordered the release by Friday of the actuarial report used in formulating the proposed NFL concussion lawsuit settlement.
Filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, the order came in response to motions by retired players and media outlets to obtain the report that is expected to project how many players would receive monetary awards from the proposed settlement.
Last week, the NFL and lawyers for the retired players who sued the league over concussions filed briefs saying they didn’t oppose the release.
The report was filed in February with Perry Golkin, the court-appointed special master overseeing the settlement, before the parties agreed to remove the cap on monetary awards and U.S. District Judge Anita Brody granted the settlement preliminary approval.
Retired players have until Oct. 14 to object to the settlement or opt out and continue litigation on their own.
A fairness hearing is scheduled for Nov. 19 in front of Brody in Philadelphia.
