Ron Washington resigned Friday as manager of the Texas Rangers.

In a statement, Washington said he was stepping down “in order to devote my full attention to addressing an off-the-field personal matter.” He did not elaborate, but said his decision was “in no way related to the disappointing performance of the team this season.”

The Rangers have the worst record in the major leagues.

“We were looking forward to moving ahead with Ron as our manager in 2015,” Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels said in a statement.

Washington, 62, led the Rangers to the only World Series appearances in their history, in 2010 and 2011. He managed the team for eight years, with the most victories (664) and games (1,275) of any manager in club history.

The Rangers appointed bench coach Tim Bogar as interim manager. Bogar, a former major-league infielder, finished his playing career with the Dodgers in 2001.
