Celebrate Willie Mays’ 85th birthday by watching his amazing 1954 World Series catch
Willie Mays, who turned 85 on Friday, is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. He is 11th all-time in hits, fifth in home runs and was a Gold Glove center fielder.
In honor of Mays’ birthday, we thought it would be good to revisit his most famous play of all: his over-the-shoulder catch of a Vic Wertz drive in the 1954 World Series. It is one of the most memorable plays in baseball history, and you can watch it in the video above.
