USC freshmen preview: Christian Rector will join defensive line

USC freshman defensive lineman Christian Rector at player-run practices in June.

This month we will preview each USC freshman who will join the team in training camp.

Player: Christian Rector

Position: Defensive end

Number: 89

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 260 pounds

High school: Loyola

Hometown: South Pasadena, Calif.

High school: Rector was named an Army All-American at Loyola High. He made nine tackles for losses, including two sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble during the 2014 season.

USC position group breakdown: Rector is among five freshmen defensive linemen and is in a crowded group at defensive end.

USC listed Rector as reserve end with freshman Kevin Scott on the fall depth chart.

Fifth-year senior Claude Pelon, who was a backup tackle last season, is listed as the starter.

Fifth-year senior Greg Townsend Jr. is listed as Pelon’s backup. Townsend has been slowed or sidelined because of injuries the last three seasons.

Townsend is followed on the depth chart by redshirt freshman Malik Dorton, who practiced on the scout team last season.

Season prediction for Rector: Rector is a candidate to redshirt.
