UCLA’s Josh Rosen, USC’s Cameron Smith named Pac-12 freshmen of the year

USC linebacker Cameron Smith and UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen were chosen as the Pac-12’s top freshman football players in voting by the conference’s head coaches announced on Tuesday.

Stanford running back and return specialist Christian McCaffrey was offensive player of the year, and Oregon end DeForest Buckner was the top defensive player. David Shaw of Stanford and Mike Leach of Washington State were co-coaches of the year. Mike Bercovici, Arizona State’s quarterback, was chosen the top scholar-athlete.

Five USC players and one from UCLA were selected to the first team.

Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, linebacker Su’a Cravens, defensive back Adoree’ Jackson, offensive tackle Zach Banner and defensive lineman Antwaun Woods made the top team from USC, along with UCLA defensive lineman Kenny Clark.


Clark has 58 tackles, including 5 1/2 for losses.

Smith-Schuster has 74 receptions, 10 for touchdowns. Cravens, a two-time first-team choice, has two interceptions and leads USC with 13 1/2 tackles for losses, including 5 1/2 sacks. Jackson, who also was listed on the second team as a return specialist, returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown against California. Woods has six tackles for losses, including three sacks.

Offensive tackle Chad Wheeler, defensive lineman Delvon Simmons and special teams player Soma Vainuku were USC players on the second team.

Second-team choices from UCLA were center Jake Brendel and offensive lineman Conor McDermott, linebacker Deon Hollins, running back Paul Perkins, tight end Thomas Duarte, defensive backs Randall Goforth and Jaleel Wadood and kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn.
