Taking a page from the Dodgers playbook, Cal will play first college football game in ’16 in Australia
Go Bears -- even when they’re Down Under.
The Golden Bears from UC Berkeley will participate in the first U.S. college football game ever to be played in Australia.
In 2014, the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team played its opening games of the season in Sydney, Australia.
The Bears square off with the Rainbow Warriors from the University of Hawaii on Aug. 27 in Sydney to open the 2016 NCAA college football season.
And yes, you can expect to see cheerleaders, mascots and marching bands to make sure Australians get the full-on football experience.
The Sydney College Football Cup, as it’s called, will be played in the ANZ Stadium that was built for the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Die-hard Cal fans can buy tickets starting at $50, including fees, according to Ticketek. (Note prices are displayed in Australian dollars.)
The Dodgers played the opening games of the 2014 season in Sydney, Australia, at the Cricket Ground.
Australia has been getting an authentic taste of American sports lately.
In March 2014, Major League Baseball held its opening game in Sydney with a match-up of the L.A. Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. (The Dodgers won both games.) The teams played the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The college football game is organized in part by Destination NSW, the tourism and events agency for the region of New South Wales.
