Try out that new lens on L.A. Zoo’s supermodels during special photo day

Here’s a way to grab your camera and come home with some astounding photos of lions or giraffes without having to get on an airplane.

The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is hosting its once-a-year photo day on Nov. 8. This is a chance for beginners and experienced photographers alike to learn how to get the best shots of animals.

You’ll be inside the zoo for an hour before it opens to the public, and you’ll get to try out your telephoto and macro lenses too.

“When you get to the zoo, you get an opportunity to experiment with different camera equipment you might not have access to,” says Kirin Daugharty, manager of volunteer programs.

Indeed, participants reserve camera gear when they sign up for the daylong session (it’s included in the price). Registration costs $175 per photographer until Nov. 5; $200 after that date.

Other activities include photographing reptiles and entering a photo day contest to win prizes. Photo lessons cover how to capture the best light and how to work with fencing and glass reflection when you’re on the road.

Representatives from camera companies, guest speakers and experts from Paul’s Photos in Torrance provide instruction. Lunch and admission to the zoo is included in the price.
