Free gasoline cards are back. Soaring gas prices, which last week hit an average $3.71 a gallon in California and $3.38 nationally, might be the reason.

Choice Hotels aims to take the sting out of road trips by offering a $50 gas card for two hotel stays.

The deal: The Free $50 Gas Card offer applies to stays at Comfort Inns, Comfort Suites, Quality Inns, Sleep Inns, Clarion, Cambria Suites and Ascend Collection. Guests must stay a minimum of two consecutive nights at these other properties in the hotel chain: MainStay Suites, Suburban Extended Stay Hotels, Econo Lodges and Rodeway Inns.

Membership in Choice Privileges (it’s free to join) is required for this deal. After two separate visits, travelers accrue enough points -- 8,000 to be exact -- to redeem for one $50 gas card. Reservations must be made online or by phone with the hotel.

When: Travelers must complete their stays between now and May 4. They can redeem points for the $50 gas card through July 31.
