Memorial Day: LAX travelers should allow at least two hours before flights during peak travel times

More than 800,000 travelers are expected to pass through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) between Friday and Monday during the Memorial Day holiday, according to a news release from the airport. LAX says the number represents a 5.4% increase from the same holiday period last year.

As usual, Friday and Monday are predicted to be the heaviest travel days. During peak travel times each day of the long weekend -- 6-9 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 7-11 p.m -- passengers should arrive at the airport two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights to make sure they don’t miss their flights, the release says.

Automobile Club of Southern California estimates that 2.62 million Southern Californians will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday weekend, about the same number as last year.

So where is everyone going this weekend? Online travel company Orbitz ranked the 10 most popular destinations based on hotel reservations for Memorial Day made through its website by May 10.
