California: Concerts at 3 missions focus on re-creating music
The history of California’s missions is well documented, but what about the music of the era? The San Luis Obispo Symphony Chamber Players captures the 18th century sound by playing an interpretation of mission-era music during its first California Missions Tour in January.
The chamber group will feature violinist Shunské Sato and conductor Michael Nowak. The group will play Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” as well as “newly re-imagined music from California’s past, performed where it was originally inspired,” composer Craig Russell says in a statement about the music he wrote called “Ecos Armonicos.”
“It certainly starts like a Spanish classical piece, but all of a sudden you’re in a festival square and you see dancers,” spokeswoman Patty Thayer says.
The concert playlist remains the same for all three, but the different venues make each performance distinct. The series starts at 2:30 p.m. Jan 12 in Mission San Miguel (in San Miguel, north of Paso Robles) and continues with another concert the same day at 8 p.m. at Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. The final concert takes place at 3 p.m. Jan. 13 at Mission Santa Barbara.
Tickets range from $15 to $35 for each concert and can be bought online or by phone.
