Hawaii: Waikiki Spam Jam pays homage to an island favorite
Spam, beloved among Hawaiians, will be celebrated April 27 during Waikiki Spam Jam, one of Honolulu’s biggest annual street festivals.
Spam merchandise (such as T-shirts) will be sold, but the biggest draw is Spam itself. A dozen Honolulu restaurants that cook with the canned pork and ham product will dish up a variety of Spam-centric creations, including a Spam-on-a-stick frozen treat.
A new offering for 2013 is Spam cheesecake.
The festival stretches for several blocks along Waikiki’s Kalakaua Avenue from Lewers Street to the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach hotel. Food tents and vendors will be scattered along the route, with stages outside both the hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Center. They’ll feature various local entertainers.
The event runs from 4 to 10 p.m. Admission is free, but attendees are encouraged to donate a nonperishable food item (Spam is welcome) or cash. Last year’s festival collected more than 2,200 pounds of food and nearly $25,000 to help feed the state’s hungry.
Hawaiians are the United States’ largest consumers of Spam. Manufacturer Hormel Foods says islanders buy more than 7 million cans each year.
