The summer amusement park season is starting to ramp up, and West Inn and Suites in Carlsbad, has low room prices for families who want to visit Legoland California. Rooms for two adults and two children start at $159 a night -- and that includes breakfast and parking.

The deal: Legoland California just opened its on-site hotel, but West Inn and Suites might be a cheaper alternative. It is 10 minutes away and offers freebies such as cookies and milk before bedtime, a hot breakfast buffet or a grab-and-go breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi and a shuttle to Legoland and other stops in Carlsbad.

When the kids tire of the amusement park, there’s a heated pool, and the beach is about four blocks away. (The hotel even has an on-site dog park.) Travel + Leisure magazine recently picked the hotel with 86 rooms and 36 suites (all featuring king-sized beds) as a good bet for families watching their vacation budget.

When: The deal is good indefinitely, based on availability.

Tested: I found a room available for Mother’s Day weekend (May 10-12) for $169 a night plus tax. The king suite sleeps four with one king-size bed for parents and a pull-out couch for kids.
