‘Forever Marilyn’ gets 90-day extension to stay in Palm Springs
The “Forever Marilyn” sculpture that was slated to leave Palm Springs in June will stay put for the long, hot summer. The sculpture’s stay has been extended 90 days, according to an announcement Thursday.
The 34,300-pound, 26-foot-tall likeness of Marilyn Monroe has stood at the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way for a year and was supposed to leave the first week in June. The city had even organized a farewell party.
But negotiations with the Sculpture Foundation, which owns the traveling artwork by Seward Johnson, extended the sculpture’s stay, tourism organization P.S. Resorts reports.
“‘Forever Marilyn’ is adored by our residents and visitors alike,” Mayor Steve Pougnet said in the announcement. “We’re happy to have her for another three months while the demolition of Desert Fashion Plaza finished and construction begins.” The sculpture stands near the site of a former mall that’s being taken down and a new shopping mall and hotel overseen by real estate developer John Wessman are going up.
At the sculpture site, more events will be planned this summer in addition to those already scheduled for May, according to P.S. Resorts. The Forever Marilyn Outdoor Movie Series will show her films on May 3 and 17, and hold ShortFest film screenings on June 7. Monroe’s birthday celebrations — she would have been 86 on June 1 — will take place on that date from 6 to 9:30 p.m. with an Elton John tribute performer and birthday cake. All events are free.
