California: B&Bs; honor military on Veteran’s Day and year round

Many California bed and breakfasts give discounts to servicemen and women on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) and the rest of the year. Here are five that military members may want to consider for a getaway in November and beyond.

The deal: Each offer is specific to the individual inn, but all require folks to ask for the military discount when making a reservation.

--The Joshua Inn Bed & Breakfast in Hollister, Calif., features five rooms in a Victiorian mansion in the town northeast of Salinas. The inn offers a 15% discount year-round to members of the military for rooms that range from $110 to $210 a night plus tax. Mention military service when you book and present a valid military ID upon check-in. Info: (831) 265-7829

--Elk Cove Inn and Spa in Mendocino sits atop a bluff overlooking the ocean. The inn offers 20% discount from Nov. 8 to 11 and 10% discount year round for active duty military. Rooms range from $100 to $365 in the low season. Info: (800) 275-2967

--Harkey House Bed & Breakfast Inn in Yuba City offers a 10% discount off standard rates, excluding holidays, for members of the military. Room cost $118 to $235 a night plus tax. Info: (530) 674-1942.

--Honor Mansion in Healdsburg takes 10% off the cost of lodging for members of the military. The inn has 13 rooms and is located in Sonoma’s wine country. Rooms cost $240 to $700 a night, depending on season and room type. Info: (707) 433-4277

--Queen Ann Hotel in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood offers discounts that vary but are available year-round. A check on the website shows that rooms start at $175 a night in November. Info: (800) 227-3970

When: Most discounts are offered year-round, based on availability.

Details: You won’t find the discounts if you make reservations online. Bookings must be made by phone, and most require proof of military service.
