Let’s take a closer look at the highlights:

The Joker

The Joker coaster planned for Vallejo’s Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will transform the 1999 Roar wooden coaster into a triple-inversion wood-steel hybrid.

The renovated coaster at the park will feature a world’s-first element called a “step-up under-flip inverted roll” that twists riders upside down as they head uphill before emptying them into a 270-degree hairpin turn.

Rocky Mountain Construction will handle the coaster renovation.

Total Mayhem

The Total Mayhem fourth-dimension roller coaster coming to Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey will feature seats that spin forward and backward as the train navigates a zigzagging track with undulating straightaways and free-fall drops.

Built on a relatively compact footprint, the 4-D Free Spin coaster by Utah-based S&S Worldwide snakes back and forth on a serpentine track like a demonic pachinko game.

A similar version of the 4-D coaster was built at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in 2015.

Justice League: Battle for Metropolis 3-D

Six Flags Great America in Illinois and Six Flags Mexico plan to introduce 3-D interactive dark rides called Justice League: Battle for Metropolis.

Themed to the crime-fighting team of DC Comics superheroes, the new dark rides designed by Florida-based Sally Corp. will feature motion-platform vehicles, animatronic figures and laser-gun gameplay. Along the way, riders will help Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern face off against the Joker, Lex Luthor and other comic book villains.

After introducing identical Justice League attractions in 2015 at Six Flags Over Texas and Six Flags St. Louis, it will be interesting to see if Six Flags rolls out the popular new dark rides at its other locations.

New Revolution

Six Flags Magic Mountain will remove the universally despised over-the-shoulder restraints on the Revolution roller coaster and replace them with modern snug-fitting lap bars in 2016.

In honor of Revolution’s 40th anniversary, the Valencia amusement park will give the track a new paint job, update the aging station, install new trains on the existing coaster chassis and add the new restraints similar to the ones used on Full Throttle and Twisted Colossus. The renovated ride will be renamed New Revolution.

Villain-themed flat rides

Six Flags Over Texas will add three villain-themed flat rides to the Gotham City area of the park. The new towering Riddler Revenge pendulum swing will be joined by a pair of vintage spinning rides.

Catwoman Whip will be a thrill ride known as an Enterprise, a spinning ride attached to a tilting arm with swinging gondolas first made in the 1970s by both Schwarzkopf and Huss.

Harley Quinn Spinsanity will be a 1970s-era Huss Troika that is similar to the popular Scrambler rides except suspended from overhead arms that tilt.

Giant Loops

Four parks will install looping thrill rides typically associated with traveling carnivals and county fairs.

Built by Texas-based Larson International, the 70-foot-tall Giant Loops have gone by various names in the past, including Fireball, Ring of Fire and Super Loop.

The new rides will be called Fireball at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Six Flags St. Louis and Six Flags New England and Greezed Lightnin’ at New York’s Great Escape.

At Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Fireball ride will be part of a new Fiesta Bay Boardwalk area of the park that will include a modern take on the Tilt-a-Whirl called Spinsanity and a Disk’O spinning halfpipe ride dubbed Hurricane Force 5.

At Six Flags New England, the park will also convert the Bizarro mega coaster back into its original incarnation as Superman the Ride.

Kiddie lands

Six Flags Over Georgia will introduce two kiddie lands themed to the Looney Tunes cartoon characters and the DC Comics Super Friends, with a total of 12 family rides and attractions.

The nearby water park will also add the 60-foot tall Wahoo Racer mat-racing slide, the largest of its kind in the world.

Avenue Adventure

A new area of Canada’s La Ronde called Avenue Adventure will feature two rides: The Phoenix flying scooters and the Gravitor spinning flat ride.

The Montreal-area park will also run the 2002 Vampire inverted coaster with its seats facing backward for the 2016 season.
