Shopping: The Shop at the Standard keeps it local

Special to the Los Angeles Times

The Standard is getting into the buy-local movement with the opening of the revamped Shop at the Standard, which will carry a mix of Los Angeles-made and locally based brands.

The Shop, which shares a space with Rudy’s Barbershop at the downtown hotel, is celebrating its grand reopening Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. (to attend, RSVP to tiana@nadinejohnson.com). At the event, L.A.-based accessory designer Clare Vivier will unveil her limited-edition collection of evening clutches co-branded with the Shop. Toms Shoes, based in Santa Monica, is bringing its signature “Style Your Sole” party to the party with artist Philip Lumbang creating custom designs on Toms shoes. The event will also feature designer mini-trunk shows, a special vintage sunglass collection for purchase, snacks, drinks and live music by Obi Best.

FOR THE RECORD:
Standard Hotel: In Sunday’s Image section, a Shopping column item about the Shop at the Standard said the Standard Hotel in downtown Los Angeles was once the Standard Oil Building. It is in the former Superior Oil Building. —

The Shop at the Standard was redesigned by Commune, a West Hollywood-based design firm that has collaborated on projects including the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs and a special holiday gift shop hawking local luxury goods such as fragrances from L’Oeil du Vert by Haley Alexander van Oosten. The new look features magenta cabinets influenced by the hotel’s Vladimir Kagan lobby sofas, which are in a similar hue. National Forest, another local design studio, installed an orange grove mural in the shop to play on the City of Angels’ humble origins in contrast with today’s skyline.

“It’s important to us that the shops are not just ‘hotel gift-shops’ but are real neighborhood spots,” says Claire Darrow, creative director for Andre Balazs Properties, the hotelier that owns the Standard. “Most travelers are looking for the ‘locals’ experience and being able to take a bit of that home with you, through the shop, makes sense.”

Clare Vivier, who sews her bags in Burbank from remnant leather, is a prime example of an up-and-coming local artisan. This year, Target and Daily Candy selected the Echo Park resident for Target’s online Red Hot Shop, featuring exclusive merchandise. For the Shop at the Standard, Vivier designed an exclusive small evening clutch ($139) and a larger one ($149) in her signature fold-over style with a magenta zipper to match the Kagan sofas. The bags come in either camel or black leather and sport the Shop at the Standard, Downtown LA, mushroom logo.

“I love the lobby at the Standard Downtown — it feels like an old chic office building,” says Vivier, referencing the hotel’s history as Claud Beelman’s Standard Oil building from 1955.

At the event, shoppers can check out leather bags by Dean, designed by Danny Dean in his Sunset Junction atelier. Alice Park is another local leather goods manufacturer, specializing in satchels and totes. Livity, based in Topanga, sells hats, which although sourced internationally are made from organic, renewable and recyclable materials like raffia.

The Shop is also stocked to the gills with an L.A. necessity: sunglasses. The store carries statement eyewear from hard-to-find brands such as Karen Walker, Retrosuperfuture and Tsubi (around $180). During the opening party, there will be a one-night vintage eyewear sale on brands ranging from Christian Dior to Playboy.
