The man shot and killed by San Fernando police on Tuesday exited the house holding a loaded gun, authorities said.
The man — identified Wednesday as Gabriel Lopez-Gonzalez, 22, of Van Nuys — was killed by police at about 3:30 p.m. after he emerged from a home in the 800 block of South Brand Boulevard holding the gun, authorities said.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which has joined the investigation, San Fernando police were responding to a call about a man with a gun. Just as officers arrived, a woman ran out of a home with an apparent gunshot wound.
“As the officers approached the residence, they were confronted by a male suspect, who produced a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded handgun was recovered next to him. The female victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive her injuries, officials said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Sheriff Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
There have been at least 302 people killed in officer-involved shootings since 2007, according to The Times' Homicide Report database.
