Former Occidental chief reportedly named U.S. education official
Ted Mitchell, the former president of Occidental College, is reportedly in line for an important education post in the Obama administration.
Mitchell is expected to be named undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Education, replacing Martha Kanter, who handled higher education issues affecting colleges and universities, according to the Politico website.
After leading Occidental from 1999 to 2005, Mitchell has been chief executive of the NewSchools Venture Fund, a nonprofit that seeks to improve urban schools. A spokesperson at NewSchools said that Mitchell would not comment on the report about his federal appointment.
Mitchell had been president of California’s State Board of Education and a dean of UCLA’s graduate school of education and also held positions at Stanford and Dartmouth universities.
Kanter also previously had experience at a California college, as chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District.
