Paramount schools lockdown lifted after suspect is arrested

Schools in Paramount were placed on lockdown for several hours Friday as deputies searched for an armed suspect in the area.

Lt. Dave Auner of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood station said the suspect, a parolee, was spotted with a handgun about 10:30 a.m. in an area near the schools.

Paramount High School, Roosevelt Elementary School and Wirtz Elementary School were placed on lockdown while deputies and investigators searched the area near Century Boulevard and Downey Avenue.

According to a sheriff’s statement, the suspect was a 25-year-old man. Auner said he was arrested about 3:45 p.m. He had no further information.

Auner said he was unsure if the gun had been found.
