A man was shot and killed by police in Vermont Knolls after he shot his wife and then opened fire on responding officers, authorities said Monday.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, sustained “multiple gunshot wounds” and was pronounced dead outside his home in the 1100 block of West 81st Place shortly after 2 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Officer Sara Faden.

Authorities had received a 911 call regarding possible domestic violence at the home moments earlier, Faden said. By the time the officers arrived, the wife had been shot, and as the man exited the home, he began shooting, prompting officers to return fire, police said.

The man was “completely out of control” when officers arrived, Deputy Chief Bob Green told reporters at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident and the man’s wife was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

There have been 17 homicides in Vermont Knolls in the last year, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Homicide Report database.
