The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said a man who was fatally shot by a deputy in Carson over the weekend was an at-large parolee wanted on a warrant and known to have been “armed and dangerous.”

The incident began Saturday about 3:30 p.m. when sheriff’s deputies on routine patrol saw several cars parked illegally in an alley near 6 Squaw Peak Lane and saw several men congregating in an open garage, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.

The deputies smelled marijuana, and several of the men in the garage complied with orders to come out. But two men, including the man who was subsequently shot and killed, stayed inside the garage “and began to verbally assault the deputies,” according to the release.

Recognizing the man wanted on the warrant, the deputies called for assistance and subdued the suspect with pepper spray, the release said.

The suspect tried to run past one of the deputies and grab his gun, authorities said. During a struggle, the deputy shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. His identity was not released.
