Keep transit on track

Re “Budget may ride on cuts in transit,” July 20

Traffic congestion, bad air quality, the dire consequences of global warming; it seems like this is all we hear about these days. So how do the geniuses in Sacramento propose to address these serious problems? Apparently by robbing $1 billion from transit funding while continuing to fund more infrastructure for private automobiles. Brilliant!

We cannot afford to put the brakes on much-needed transit projects across the state. We have gridlock on our roads, ambitious global warming commitments to meet and a growing population that will require more public transit. With 60 million people living in California by 2050, it is clear that we need to invest in public transit to keep California moving.

When funding for projects like the Expo Line and high-speed rail from San Diego to Sacramento is put on hold, the proposed budget cuts from the governor and state Legislature are unacceptable. Our politicians in Sacramento should put their differences aside and commit to increased, dependable funding for public transit in future budgets. In the end, California must keep transit on track.

It is a disgrace that once again our representatives can come up with nothing more imaginative and compassionate than balancing the state budget with cuts to the poor, elderly and disabled.
