Prison System Should Do Right by Ex-Con

Re “Life on a New Track Could Be Derailed by Sentencing Dispute,” March 31: The California Department of Corrections and the California attorney general’s office must be out of their collective minds. Pamela Martinez is not an escapee! After spending seven years in prison, she has spent the last 2 1/2 years leading an exemplary life. Now they want to confine her for an additional 65 days over a difference of opinion in computation? Get real, folks. You released her!

All over the state, prisoners are being released early by counties for the simple reason that their budgets are tight and they can’t afford to keep prisoners locked up. Here we have a case of wanting to lock someone up, thereby setting back that person’s rehabilitation, because of a technical flaw in the math. Quit wasting our tax dollars and splitting hairs. Let Pamela Martinez go.
