Football: Michael Bonds follows in the tradition of Bonds quarterbacks

Share

Back in the 1980s, the Bonds brothers were kings at Newhall Hart.

Tom Bonds quarterbacked Hart to a Southern Section championship in 1983 and went on to Cal Lutheran. Brother Jimmy became a standout quarterback for the Indians, winning a Southern Section title in 1986 and received a scholarship to UCLA. He’s now the head coach at St. Francis.

So it comes as no surprise that Tom’s son, Michael, can throw the football pretty accurately as the quarterback for Newport Harbor.

Bonds, a 6-foot-2 junior, completed 10 of 12 passes in the season-opening win over Eisenhower. This past week, he was 10 of 16 passing, including three touchdowns, in a win over El Rancho.

Now comes the biggest of games, a Thursday showdown against rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay at Orange Coast College.

All he needs to do is ask his father or uncle about how to handle rivalry games, since their big rivalry games used to be when Hart played Canyon Country Canyon.

Michael has one big advantage over his father and uncle. He lives near the beach and is the best surfer in the family.
