Kings’ Jonathan Quick wins NHL’s Jennings Trophy
There is one small downside to winning the William M. Jennings Trophy, according to Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
The Jennings award goes to “the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it.” It had never been won by a Kings’ goalie and Quick won it outright when the Boston Bruins allowed three goals Sunday in their final game of the season, bringing their total to 177. Los Angeles allowed 174 goals this season.
“The goalie is nominated to make the speech at the awards there, but the team gave up the least amount of goals in the league,” Quick said on Saturday night. “If I could have somebody else give the speech, I would.”
Quick was talking after the Ducks beat the Kings, 4-3, in a shootout in the Kings’ regular-season finale. His backup, Martin Jones, played in 19 games and goalie Ben Scrivens, who was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in January, also appeared in 19 games.
It was suggested to Quick that the chatty Scrivens could help out in regard to the speech. “Well, I think they have time limits on speeches,” said Quick, joking.
The Jennings is an important marker for the franchise.
“Since I’ve been here we’ve put a big emphasis on how we play in our own end, all five guys helping out,” Quick said. “We’ve done a great job over the year, especially the past three or four years. … It’s good for the team to be recognized.”
