Clippers talk with Jamal Crawford, plan visit with Ray Allen

It was a busy day for the Clippers, and it left the organization hopeful.

The Clippers began Tuesday by welcoming free-agent guard Jamal Crawford to the team’s facility for a visit. The team then scheduled a visit by free-agent guard Ray Allen for Friday, according to NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The team hasn’t yet agreed to a sign-and-trade deal that would send Reggie Evans to the Brooklyn Nets for a future second-round draft pick, the executives said, but it’s still being considered.

To complete the day’s efforts, the Clippers reached out to 6-foot-5 guard Courtney Lee, who was told earlier in the day that the Houston Rockets weren’t going to make him a qualifying offer.

That makes Lee an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team.

Crawford was impressed by his visit to the Clippers’ facility, and the organization was impressed by the 6-5 guard.

The Clippers could offer a free agent a mid-level exception deal starting at $5 million and worth up to $21.7 million over four years.

They are willing to offer Crawford, 32, a three-year deal worth about $15.7 million, according to the NBA executives.

The Clippers view Allen as a good fit as well because of his tremendous outside shooting ability.

They like the idea of the 6-5 Allen playing alongside the penetrating Chris Paul because he could open up the court for Blake Griffin.

Allen, who had surgery on his right ankle last month, averaged 14.2 points and shot 45% from three-point range last season with the Boston Celtics.

Allen, a 16-year veteran who turns 37 this month, has made 2,718 three-pointers, the most in NBA history.

The Celtics, Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies also are interested in Allen, who won a championship ring with Boston in 2008.

The Clippers could use the mid-level exception for Allen and probably would offer him a two-year deal.

Chauncey Billups is expected to be back with the team, the executives said, probably for a one-year deal that will pay him up to $4.3 million if he reaches bonuses.

Ryan Hollins, a 7-foot center who played with Boston last season, is someone the Clippers are interested in for the veteran’s minimum.

Free agents can’t sign contracts until July 11.
