Angels release Bobby Abreu, call up Mike Trout after 3-2 loss

CLEVELAND—The Angels made two dramatic moves after a 3-2 walk-off loss to the Cleveland Indians Friday night, releasing veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu and swallowing the remainder of his $9-million contract while promoting dynamic young outfielder Mike Trout from triple-A Salt Lake.

Both Manager Mike Scioscia and General Manager Jerry Dipoto said Trout, the speedy 20-year-old who was batting .403 at Salt Lake and can play all three outfield spots, will play every day, and there is a good chance he will be inserted into the leadoff spot.

“We want to add a little energy, add a little spice,” said Dipoto, who joined the team in Cleveland on Friday night. “We’re trying to shake it up a little.”

Abreu, 38, was productive through the 2010 season, but he slipped to .253 with eight homers and 60 runs batted in last season. With the signing of Albert Pujols and return of Kendrys Morales, there was no significant role this season for Abreu, who asked to be traded in February.

“It’s sad because I had a great time with my teammates and I enjoyed being here,” said Abreu, who hopes to play for another club. “But this is a business. They did what they had to do, and I have no control over it.”
