Death threat doesn’t faze skier Tina Maze, who finishes fourth

Tina Maze, a 29-year-old Slovenian skier who has clinched the World Cup overall women’s title this season, shook off a death threat to finish fourth in the super-giant slalom race Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Maze, one of only six women to win World Cup events in all five Alpine disciplines, won the downhill event Saturday and then received an email threatening her life.

On Sunday, two bodyguards were by her side all day, Maze said she never felt threatened.

“I’ve had police in front my door all the time since yesterday,” said Maze, a silver medalist in the super-G and giant slalom at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

“If somebody is strong and showing good performances and perfect in the thing you are doing, there are people who want to disturb you,” added Maze, who recently won the world championship in the super-G and claimed a world title in the giant slalom in 2011. “I guess it’s part of the game but it didn’t disturb me that much.

“It shouldn’t be part of the game but life is not perfect. It’s not nice for me, it’s not nice for my team. They want to ruin your day, ruin the record, but I enjoyed the day 100%.”

Anna Fenninger of Austria won the super-G on Sunday by two-tenths of a second over Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch. Taking third was American Julia Mancuso, who will battle Maze for the World Cup super-G season title in two weeks at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
