UCLA Coach Jim Mora not big on injury reports

Share

UCLA Coach Jim Mora learned about three weeks ago that he was not required to give injury updates. So he did what any coach would do: he abolished the practice.

In the wake of Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott saying the conference will consider a mandatory injury report each week, Mora said, “If it is across the board, and everyone is held to the same standard, then I don’t have any problem with it at all.”

But, he said, “Anytime a coach doesn’t have to divulge information that his opponents can find useful in game-planning against him, then we’re going to try to do that.”

Mora was an assistant for 25 seasons in the NFL, which has weekly injury reports. But are those reports accurate?

“Sometimes, with certain teams,” Mora said. “I think there are some coaches who understand how to manipulate it a little bit.”

The NFL, Mora said, “is worried about some bettors having more information than others, so they try to streamline the information. And I think that’s fine. But from a coach’s perspective, anytime you lose a competitive advantage, it’s hard.”
