Dale Ellis’ missed free throw with three seconds left enabled the San Antonio Spurs to defeat the Dallas Mavericks, 116-115, Thursday night at San Antonio in a game that saw the ejection of two players.

Ellis hit a three-point field goal and was fouled by Johnny Moore with three seconds remaining to bring the Mavericks within one point. But he missed the free throw that would have given him a rare four-point play, and Moore grabbed the rebound to preserve the victory.

The game was marred by a fight between Gene Banks of San Antonio and Mark Aguirre of the Mavericks, who got into a scuffle under the Dallas basket after Kurt Nimphius missed a shot with 24 seconds to play and San Antonio leading 113-101. Referee Earl Strom suffered a minor cut on his chin when he stepped between the players. He ejected both.
