Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie, playing the second of three postseason games within a 13-day span, will direct the East All-Stars against the West today in the 39th Hula Bowl at Honolulu.

The East team will be coached by Boston College’s Jack Bicknell, and also will feature Flutie’s Boston College teammate Gerard Phelan, who caught Flutie’s last-ditch, game-winning touchdown against Miami. After today’s game, Flutie heads for Tokyo and the Japan Bowl on Jan. 13.

All-American lineman Bill Mayo of Tennessee and two second-team selections, tackle Lomas Brown of Florida and guard Larry Williams of Notre Dame, will help Flutie up front.

Two of the top running backs in the nation will be showcased today in the 60th annual East-West Shrine game at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto.

Johnnie Jones of Tennessee and George Adams of Kentucky lead the East team coached by Harvard’s Joe Restic. Jones was ranked No. 5 in the nation and was the top senior rusher with 1,290 yards. Adams finished the season with 1,085 yards.

The East also has the top punter in college football, Ricky Anderson of Vanderbilt, and Colgate quarterback Steve Calabria, who passed for 54 touchdowns and 8,555 yards in his career.

The West, coached by Washington State’s Jim Walden with assistance from LaVell Edwards of top-ranked Brigham Young, features running back Jeff Smith of Nebraska, who gained more than 900 yards. He ran for 84 yards in helping Nebraska to a 28-10 victory over Louisiana State in the Sugar Bowl.
