Prep Basketball BOYS ROUNDUP : Burroughs Contains Robinson and Defeats Simi Valley, 68-56

Mark Robinson, Simi Valley’s one-gun attack, was ambushed by Indians Friday night.

The 6-5 senior center entered the nonleague contest against Burroughs of Burbank averaging 25.1 points per game and he did score 22 in Simi Valley’s 68-56 loss, but the Indians’ collapsing zone defense held him to just seven baskets in 23 attempts. Robinson did manage to grab a game-high 17 rebounds, though.

After the game, Burroughs Coach Jesse Mason said the key for the Indians was their defense on Robinson. “Our plan was to contain him by minimizing the number of passes inside. I think it took him out of his game for a while.”

Burroughs used as many as three players at a time to stop Robinson. Rob Scott, Mickey Diaz and Robert Fundter combined to restrict the passing lanes to the Simi Valley standout and Robinson had to rely on his own rebounding to get the ball.

Scott not only did an excellent job on defense, he scored a game-high 26 points and also pulled down seven rebounds to help the Indians improve their record to 7-6.

Mason was very pleased with Scott’s performance. “This was by far his best game. He made some key blocks, key assists and he kept the team in control when we ran our delay game,” Mason said.

Ray Rodriguez scored 17 for Burroughs, while Fundter added 10.

Mike Hankins had 12 points for the Pioneers, while Sean Harrigan chipped in 10.

The lead changed hands 10 times in the first half before Burroughs nosed ahead, 28-25, just before the intermission.
