Bill Shoemaker, the winningest jockey in history aboard thoroughbreds, switched to quarter horses Saturday night and found the winner’s circle again.

Shoemaker rode Highesterjet to a 3/4-length victory over Bunny Bidajett and Mazatlan in the 400-yard $12,000 Thoroughbred Jockey Invitational at Los Alamitos. The winner paid $5.80 as the 9-5 favorite.

Gary Stevens rode Bidajett, and Terry Lipham was aboard Mazatlan. Other thoroughbred jockeys in the special race included Eddie Delahoussaye, Ray Sibille and Sandy Hawley.
