Two Clemson University coaches dispensed the prescription drug phenylbutazone, the same drug that was found in the bloodstream of a dead cross-country runner, the Greenville (S.C) News has reported.
In a copyright story, the newspaper quoted several track athletes as saying that men’s track Coach Stanley S. Narewski and strength and conditioning coach Sam L. Colson provided the drug on various occasions.
Both coaches resigned Dec. 8, three days after they were suspended without pay during an investigation. Neither would comment on the allegations made by the newspaper.
Dutch runner Augustinius Jaspers had been found dead in his Clemson dormitory room Oct. 19 of a congenital heart disease, authorities said. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division began an investigation after traces of phenylbutazone, a drug used to relieve inflamed joints, were found in Jaspers’ blood. Samples of the drug also were found in the room.
