Sparks from chimneys ignited shake roofs in separate fires in the city of Orange, causing extensive property damage but no injuries, firefighters reported. Orange Battalion Chief Jim Richardson said the first blaze was at 10:47 a.m. at 2429 E. Coolidge Ave. Preliminary investigation indicated that sparks from the chimney started the fire, which caused about $30,000 damage, Richardson said. The second fire occurred at 12:22 p.m. at 144 W. Brentwood Ave. Richardson said that residents were burning a discarded Christmas tree in the fireplace and that sparks ignited the roof. He said about 20 square feet of roof was damaged but a dollar estimate was not immediately available.
