As a precautionary measure, traps are being set throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to protect against two new species of fruit fly, state agricultural officials said. Entomologist Ray Bingham of the state Department of Food and Agriculture said no flies have been found in the Bay Area, but more than 5,500 traps will be set to allow for early detection of the bugs. The traps will be placed mostly in urban areas in Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Marin and San Francisco counties. In 1981, the state was implemented a long, costly eradication program to stamp out an infestation of the Mediterranean fruit fly.
