Ex-Angel Pitcher Kison Signed by Boston
The Boston Red Sox, looking for leadership as well as pitching help, announced Monday that they had signed veteran right-hander Bruce Kison to a one-year contract.
Kison, 34, spent the last five seasons with the Angels. In last fall’s free-agent re-entry draft, Kison was picked only by Montreal, making him available to any other team.
“We’re really delighted to have Bruce with the Red Sox,” said Lou Gorman, club vice president and general manager. “He could be a big asset for us. He has the leadership skills and positive attitude that can help any pitching staff, especially a young one like us.”
Kison’s one-year contract contains options for 1986 and 1987, based mainly on incentives.
“That’s because he’s such an unusual individual,” said Boston’s new manager, John McNamara, who managed Kison with the Angels. “He doesn’t want anything for nothing.”
Kison has a 110-85 lifetime record in the major leagues.
Kison is expected to begin the season in the Boston bullpen as a long reliever.
