FOOTBALL, INAUGURAL HEAD LIST

Share

The Inauguration of a President and the inauguration of a new prime-time series highlight the non-football viewing options on TV this weekend.

The major festivities surrounding President Reagan’s swearing in for a second term will occur Monday, safely out of the glare of the Super Bowl on Sunday. But football game or not, the law requires that the chief executive officially take the oath of office on Jan. 20, and so he shall, along with Vice President George Bush.

Live coverage from the White House will be seen on ABC, CBS, NBC and Cable News Network, with Channel 4 turning to the event at 8:30 a.m., Channel 2 at 8:45 a.m. and Channel 7 at 8:50 a.m. This “official” swearing in is in addition to the public ceremony and Inaugural parade that the networks will cover extensively Monday morning.

Earlier Sunday, at 6:30 a.m., NBC will televise the “National Day of Prayer” service at the National Cathedral in Washington, which Reagan is scheduled to attend.

Reagan will be saluted tonight at an entertainment gala that Frank Sinatra is producing at the Washington Convention Center. The two-hour event will include performances by Sinatra, Rich Little, Wayne Newton and others. ABC has it starting at 9 p.m.

What the Administration plans to do in the next four years will be the topic of discussion on an expanded edition of “Meet the Press” (Sunday at approximately 9:10 a.m., Channels 4 and 36, following the swearing-in ceremony). The program will emanate from the Roosevelt Room in the White House and will feature four of President Reagan’s top advisers: James A. Baker III, chief of staff; Michael K. Deaver, deputy chief of staff; Donald Regan, secretary of the Treasury, and Robert McFarlane, national security adviser.

Baker and Regan are also scheduled to appear on “This Week With David Brinkley” at 10 a.m. (7). Vice President George Bush and his wife, Barbara, will guest on “Face the Nation” at 9:30 a.m. (2) and 4:30 p.m. (8).

Also being inaugurated Sunday at 7 p.m. is “MacGruder & Loud,” a new ABC series about police partners who, unbeknownst to their bosses, are married. It stars John Getz and Kathryn Harrold. After this post-Super Bowl premiere, the series will be seen Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42.
