Barricaded Man With Gun in Laguna Niguel Gives Self Up
A Laguna Niguel man with a handgun who barricaded himself inside his house for 26 hours, threatening to commit suicide, surrendered peacefully to sheriff’s deputies Thursday afternoon, authorities reported.
Lawrence Daugherty came out of his house and lay down his handgun after a telephone conversation with a sheriff’s negotiator, said Lt. Bob Benson.
Daugherty, apparently despondent over an impending divorce, was taken to UCI Medical Center for observation, Benson said.
Deputies were dispatched to Daugherty’s house at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday. Daugherty had taken no hostages, Benson said.
The sheriff’s Special Weapons Team was sent to the scene Wednesday night to protect the neighborhood, authorities said. The team members stayed at the scene until Daugherty came out of his house at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Benson said.
No shots were fired and no one was injured, according to Benson.
