Rescue Helicopter Keeps Lonely Vigil on a Cold Shoulder
This is one roadside call the Automobile Club couldn’t do much about.
A county Fire Department rescue helicopter had been sent to Angeles Crest Highway late Saturday afternoon after one car sideswiped another, injuring a Monrovia man and three children.
But a sudden cottage-cheese fog grounded the copter. “We actually had the victims in the chopper,” said firefighter Gene Wright, “and the fog came in so fast we couldn’t take off.”
The victims, taken by ambulance to Verdugo Hills Hospital, were treated and released.
But the chopper was “still sitting up there,” said Capt. Mike Glosson of Engine Co. 82. Naturally, it couldn’t be left alone at roadside. So Glosson had to assign a firefighter to baby sit.
“It’s terrible, isn’t it?” he said. “To spend the night, and it’s cold. “
