7 Arrested After 72-Mile Chase
An El Monte man and six illegal aliens were arrested in Hollywood early today after a 72-mile chase from the San Onofre checkpoint in San Diego County.
Edwardo Gutierrez, 24, was carrying the six men in a stolen van when he failed to stop at the checkpoint at 2:30 a.m., a Border Patrol official said. Police then gave chase and--at speeds sometimes exceeding 90 m.p.h--followed the van northbound on Interstate 5 to the Hollywood Freeway. The men were captured after fleeing on foot on Virginia Avenue at Hobart Boulevard, officials said. Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle.
